Help Fight The Budget Cuts: Plea From the UFT
May 19th 2008Below is the text of a request from the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) to its members to help fight budget cuts that will have a severe impact on public education. We at Townsend Harris HS will take a big hit.
“Despite a multi-billion dollar budget surplus, Mayor Bloomberg wants to cut
$450 million from schools that he had promised for the coming school
year.
“Only a year ago, the city and the state pledged a $5.4 billion, four-year
increase in school spending as part of an agreement resolving the 13-year
Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit. Even though the economy is taking a
downward turn, the state kept its commitment by providing a $600 million
increase for city schools in the state budget. Now we are calling on the
mayor and the City Council to do their part.
